New York police in fresh clashes with Occupy protesters

Police and protesters have clashed in New York as the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations flare into life after weeks of inactivity.

Debris was pulled into the streets by marchers who headed from the north of Manhattan downtown towards the Financial District.

There were unconfirmed reports of a number of arrests, with claims that the police had used stun guns against marchers.
It came as hundreds of people were arrested in Oakland, California on Saturday following another OWS demonstration.

Protesters took to social media to call for donations to help with legal costs.

The protest movement had appeared to wind down since the turn of the year, with OWS abandoning a legal challenge to an eviction notice which barred protesters from Manhattan's Zuccotti Park, where they had been camping near to Wall Street since the demonstrations began last year.
